Why S2S Postback Tracking
Performance marketers running affiliate campaigns need rock-solid conversion tracking. Traditional pixel-based tracking fails in affiliate scenarios because:
- Users clear cookies between clicking an affiliate link and converting
- Mobile app environments strip tracking parameters
- Ad blockers prevent pixel fires
- Cookie syncing between affiliate networks and your site is unreliable
Server-to-server (S2S) postback tracking bypasses all of these issues. When a conversion happens, your server sends a postback URL directly to the affiliate network’s server. No browser involved, no cookies needed, no data lost. This is why a server-first marketing attribution platform is essential for any serious affiliate operation.
How S2S Postback Works
- User clicks an affiliate link - a unique click ID is generated
- ONClix captures and stores the click ID server-side
- User converts on your site - ONClix matches the conversion to the click ID
- ONClix fires a postback URL to the affiliate network with the conversion data
- Network credits the affiliate and updates reporting
The entire flow happens server-to-server. The browser is only involved in the initial click and the conversion page - the postback itself is a direct server call. This mirrors the same architecture used in ONClix server-side tracking, which captures attribution data before browser restrictions can interfere.
Conversion Deduplication
When you’re running affiliate campaigns alongside direct paid campaigns, deduplication is critical. You don’t want to pay an affiliate commission AND credit a Google Ads click for the same conversion.
ONClix’s multi-touch attribution engine handles deduplication automatically:
- Assigns fractional credit based on your chosen attribution model
- Identifies which touchpoint actually drove the conversion
- Fires postbacks only for conversions that should be attributed to affiliates via the Conversions API
- Provides a complete audit trail for dispute resolution
Fraud Detection
Affiliate fraud costs advertisers billions per year. With ONClix you have full access to raw logs to investigate suspicious patterns in your own reporting.
Roadmap — Automated Fraud Detection (Coming Soon)
The following automated fraud detection features are planned for a future release and are not yet available:
- Click flooding - abnormally high click-to-conversion ratios
- Cookie stuffing - conversions with no legitimate click trail
- Device fingerprint anomalies - same device generating clicks from different IPs
- Time-to-conversion analysis - statistically unusual conversion timing
With ONClix's first-party data approach, you have full access to raw logs for forensic analysis - something third-party platforms don’t provide.
First-Party Data Advantage
Using ONClix's first-party tracking platform gives you:
- Complete auditability for network disputes
- No vendor lock-in - migrate your data anytime
